A San Diego Comic-Con de 2021 será reduzida novamente a um evento virtual, mas o Prêmio Eisner — evento de maior prestígio no campo dos quadrinhos em homenagem ao pioneiro e criador do The Spirit, Will Eisner — vai continuar. A safra de indicados deste ano não tem tanta participação da Marvel e DC Comics. Em vez disso, destaca uma quantidade expressiva e diversificada de títulos independentes e não de super-heróis.

Como de costume, haverá um período de votação online, mas depois de problemas com o sistema no ano passado, os profissionais da indústria de quadrinhos precisarão se inscrever primeiro para votar. Embora as coisas certamente pareçam ter melhorado, há um número significativo e desproporcional de homens na grande maioria das categorias.

Os indicados ao Writers Award, em particular, são compostos de homens brancos, conhecidos principalmente por seus trabalhos em quadrinhos de super-heróis — todos eles excelentes escritores com certeza, mas essa falta de diversidade nos autores não é boa. É importante notar que dois dos membros do painel de seis jurados do prêmio eram mulheres, porém todos os integrantes estavam localizados no sul da Califórnia, presumivelmente por motivos relacionados à pandemia de Covid-19.
